Termine del Glossario Sistema solare

Descrizione Tutti gli oggetti che si trovano sotto l'influenza gravitazionale del Sole sono membri del Sistema solare. Oltre al Sole, che si trova al centro, il Sistema Solare comprende gli otto pianeti (Mercurio, Venere, Terra, Marte, Giove, Saturno, Urano e Nettuno), le loro lune, i pianeti nani, gli asteroidi, le comete, i meteroidi e altri oggetti della fascia di Kuiper e non solo, in orbita attorno al Sole, nonché i satelliti artificiali e le sonde spaziali. Si ritiene che il Sistema solare si estenda fino a 100.000 unità astronomiche dal Sole in quella che viene chiamata nube di Oort, composta da miliardi di oggetti ghiacciati.
