Glossary term: Saturno
Description: Saturno è il sesto pianeta a partire dal Sole e il secondo dei pianeti per dimensioni e massa. È un gigante gassoso con un diametro di 120.000 chilometri (km), 9,4 volte il raggio della Terra. Saturno ha la densità più bassa tra i pianeti del Sistema Solare, meno densa dell'acqua sulla Terra. La sua massa è 95 volte quella della Terra.
La sua distanza tipica dal Sole è di 1,4 miliardi di km, circa 9,5 Unità Astronomiche (distanze Terra-Sole). Saturno impiega 29,4 anni per completare un'orbita del Sole. Gli astronomi hanno individuato più di 140 lune o satelliti naturali in orbita attorno a Saturno. Tra queste lune, Titano è la più grande ed è l'unica luna del Sistema Solare con un'atmosfera significativa.
Saturno prende il nome dal dio romano dell'agricoltura, ed è noto come il gioiello del Sistema Solare. Può essere visto a occhio nudo come un punto di luce opaco nel cielo. Anche se dista più di un miliardo di chilometri dalla Terra, gli splendidi anelli che lo circondano possono essere osservati con un piccolo telescopio.
