Description: O plasma é um gás quase neutro (ou seja, com cargas equilibradas) no qual uma fração significativa das partículas é composta por íons positivos e elétrons negativos, frequentemente misturados com moléculas e átomos neutros. As propriedades do plasma são tão diferentes das dos gases neutros comuns que o plasma é considerado um “quarto estado da matéria”. Os íons positivos e os elétrons negativos permitem que o plasma conduza eletricidade. O plasma pode se formar em altas temperaturas (como nas estrelas) ou por fotoionização (como no gás interestelar). O plasma é encontrado nas estrelas, no meio interestelar, no espaço entre os planetas do Sistema Solar na forma do vento solar, dentro da magnetosfera planetária e no espaço entre as galáxias. Estima-se que mais de 99% da matéria comum no Universo observável (excluindo a matéria escura e a energia escura) esteja no estado de plasma.
