Description: El plasma es un gas cuasi-neutro (es decir, con cargas equilibradas) en el que una parte significativa de las partículas son iones positivos y electrones negativos, a menudo mezclados con moléculas y átomos neutros. Las propiedades del plasma son tan diferentes de las de los gases neutros comunes que se considera el «cuarto estado de la materia». Los iones positivos y los electrones negativos permiten que el plasma conduzca la electricidad. El plasma puede formarse a altas temperaturas (como en las estrellas) o por fotoionización (como en el gas interestelar). El plasma se encuentra en las estrellas, en el medio interestelar, en el espacio entre los planetas del Sistema Solar en forma de viento solar, dentro de la magnetosfera planetaria y en el espacio entre galaxias. Se estima que más del 99 % de la materia ordinaria del Universo observable (excluyendo la materia oscura y la energía oscura) se encuentra en estado de plasma.
