Description: Las Nubes de Magallanes son dos galaxias que orbitan alrededor de la Vía Láctea. La Gran Nube de Magallanes (LMC) tiene unos 14000 años luz de diámetro y la Pequeña Nube de Magallanes (SMC) unos 7000 años luz. La SMC es una galaxia irregular, pero es posible que la LMC tuviera una estructura espiral antes de que las fuerzas de marea provocadas por la gravedad de la Vía Láctea la desintegraran. Ambas galaxias son visibles a simple vista como tenues destellos. Estas galaxias son conocidas desde hace milenios por los pueblos de las regiones ecuatoriales y meridionales de la Tierra, quienes les dieron muchos nombres. Los astrónomos islámicos medievales las conocían por los relatos de los viajeros. Su nombre europeo proviene de Fernando de Magallanes, durante cuyos viajes se realizaron algunas de las primeras observaciones europeas de estas galaxias.
