Description: Un sistema binario es cualquier configuración de dos objetos astronómicos de tamaño comparable que orbitan entre sí bajo la influencia de su propia gravedad. Puede tratarse de una estrella binaria, en la que dos estrellas orbitan una alrededor de la otra, o de un agujero negro binario, en el que ambos objetos son agujeros negros, o de un sistema binario formado por un agujero negro y una estrella de neutrones. Los objetos de un sistema binario orbitan alrededor del centro de masa del sistema. Cuando uno de los objetos es mucho más ligero que el otro, como en el caso de una estrella y un planeta, o un planeta y una luna, sigue siendo apropiado, pero menos común, utilizar el término sistema binario.
