Description: Numerosos procesos en astronomía son cíclicos: se repiten con regularidad. Un ejemplo es la órbita de un planeta alrededor del Sol, en la que el planeta gira alrededor del Sol siguiendo la misma trayectoria una y otra vez. El tiempo que transcurre entre una repetición de dicho ciclo y la siguiente se denomina periodo del ciclo. El periodo orbital de un planeta, por ejemplo, es el tiempo que tarda el planeta en dar una vuelta completa alrededor del Sol. La repetición no tiene por qué ser perfecta, y los periodos orbitales pueden cambiar lentamente con el tiempo. Por ejemplo, la ligera disminución sistemática del periodo de la primera estrella de neutrones binaria proporcionó la primera evidencia indirecta de la emisión de ondas gravitacionales.
