Description: 천문학에서 많은 현상은 주기적, 즉 어떤 과정이 일정한 간격으로 반복되는 것입니다. 예를 들어, 행성이 태양 주위를 공전하는 궤도를 생각해 볼 수 있습니다. 행성은 같은 궤도를 따라 태양 주위를 계속 반복해서 돌며, 이처럼 한 번의 반복이 끝나고 다음 반복이 시작되기까지 걸리는 시간을 ‘주기’라고 합니다. 예를 들어, 행성의 공전주기는 행성이 태양 주위를 한 바퀴 도는 데 걸리는 시간을 의미합니다. 이 반복은 완전히 일정하지 않을 수도 있습니다. 예를 들어, 시간이 지남에 따라 공전주기가 조금씩 변할 수도 있습니다. 실제로, 중성자별 쌍성의 공전주기가 점점 줄어드는 현상은 중력파 방출이 존재한다는 사실을 보여준 최초의 간접적인 증거가 되었습니다.
