Description: No final da década de 1990, medições da luz emitida por supernovas do tipo Ia (uma classe de explosão estelar), localizadas em galáxias muito distantes, mostraram que elas pareciam mais fracas do que o esperado para um universo com uma taxa (velocidade) de expansão constante. As medições eram consistentes com o cenário em que a taxa de expansão do universo está se acelerando. A causa dessa expansão acelerada é atribuída à energia escura, cuja natureza ainda é desconhecida e constitui um tema de pesquisa atual. Essa expansão acelerada está ocorrendo em escalas muito grandes e não tem efeito significativo em galáxias individuais ligadas gravitacionalmente.
