Description: O vento solar é uma corrente de partículas, principalmente prótons e elétrons, que flui para fora do Sol a velocidades de até 900 quilômetros por segundo. O vento solar é essencialmente a coroa solar quente que se expande para o espaço interplanetário.

Muitas estrelas têm ventos; as estrelas mais frias e magneticamente ativas, como o Sol, têm ventos impulsionados pelas coroas quentes criadas por seus campos magnéticos. Algumas estrelas mais quentes têm ventos impulsionados por suas enormes luminosidades que empurram as partículas para fora de suas atmosferas superiores por meio da pressão da radiação. Gigantes vermelhas frias e supergigantes frias também podem ter ventos impulsionados pela pressão da radiação. O termo geral para o vento de uma estrela é vento estelar.

O bombardeio de partículas de um vento solar ou estelar pode ser prejudicial para qualquer vida que possa estar hospedada em um planeta. O campo magnético da Terra protege a vida em sua superfície dos efeitos prejudiciais do vento solar. A interação entre o vento solar e o campo magnético da Terra é a causa das auroras perto dos polos terrestres.
