Description: A extinção atmosférica é a espalhamento ou absorção da luz proveniente de objetos celestes ao atravessar a atmosfera terrestre. Os gases atmosféricos permitem a passagem da luz visível e são transparentes às ondas de rádio e a parte da radiação infravermelha, razão pela qual esses tipos de telescópios terrestres são amplamente utilizados. Para evitar este fenômeno e observar luz de outros comprimentos de onda, alguns telescópios estão posicionados fora da atmosfera.
