Description: A redução na intensidade da luz das estrelas que chega até nós é chamada de extinção. Essa redução se deve à absorção e dispersão da luz por partículas ao longo do trajeto da luz. A extinção pode ser causada pela atmosfera da Terra (chamada de extinção atmosférica), por material nas imediações de uma estrela (chamada de extinção circunstelar) ou por material entre estrelas no espaço profundo (chamada de extinção interestelar). A extinção atmosférica deve-se principalmente aos aerossóis e moléculas presentes na atmosfera da Terra, tais como água, dióxido de carbono e ozono, em comprimentos de onda óticos e do infravermelhos próximo. A extinção interestelar é atribuída à matéria interestelar composta por gás e partículas de poeira de tamanho sub-micrométricos. A poeira interestelar tem um efeito muito mais intenso sobre a luz estelar em comparação com as partículas de gás. A extinção é geralmente maior em comprimentos de onda mais curtos e menor em comprimentos de onda maiores, fazendo com que os objetos astronômicos pareçam mais vermelhos do que sua cor real (vermelhamento).
