Description: A palavra metal em astronomia é geralmente usada para se referir a qualquer elemento químico, exceto hidrogênio ou hélio. A nucleossíntese logo após o Big Bang resultou em um universo que era quase inteiramente composto por hidrogênio e hélio, com apenas traços de outros elementos. Ao longo do tempo, a fusão nuclear nos núcleos das estrelas converteu parte desse hidrogênio e hélio em elementos mais pesados, como carbono, oxigênio, nitrogênio e ferro. Esses novos elementos mais pesados foram posteriormente transformados por reações nucleares lentas no interior de estrelas gigantes e reações nucleares rápidas em explosões de supernovas e colisões de estrelas de nêutrons, formando os elementos naturais que conhecemos hoje. O conteúdo de metal (chamado de metalicidade) das estrelas aumenta a cada geração estelar. Em nossa galáxia, a Via Láctea, as estrelas mais antigas geralmente apresentam as menores metalicidades.
