Description: 천문학에서 ‘금속’이라는 단어는 일반적으로 수소와 헬륨을 제외한 모든 화학 원소를 뜻합니다. 빅뱅 직후의 핵합성으로 만들어진 초기 우주는 거의 대부분이 수소와 헬륨으로 이루어져 있었고, 그 밖의 원소는 아주 적은 양만 존재했습니다. 시간이 지나면서 별의 중심부에서 핵융합이 일어나, 이 수소와 헬륨의 일부가 탄소, 산소, 질소, 철과 같은 더 무거운 원소로 바뀌었습니다. 이렇게 만들어진 새로운 무거운 원소들은, 거성의 내부에서 일어나는 느린 핵 반응이나 초신성 폭발, 중성자별 충돌처럼 강력한 사건에서 일어나는 빠른 핵 반응을 거쳐 지금 우리가 알고 있는 다양한 자연 원소들로 변화했습니다. 별의 금속 함량은 세대가 지날수록 점점 늘어납니다. 그래서 우리 은하계에서 가장 오래된 별들은 일반적으로 금속 함량이 가장 낮습니다.
