Description: Uma molécula é um grupo de dois ou mais átomos unidos pelo que é conhecido como ligações químicas e com carga elétrica total igual a zero. Na química, as moléculas são limitadas a átomos unidos por ligações covalentes, mas na astronomia os compostos iônicos são às vezes chamados de "moléculas".

As moléculas estão presentes em condições que variam desde as atmosferas de estrelas do tipo solar, mais frias, e anãs marrons, até as atmosferas, oceanos e regiões geladas de planetas e luas e o material gelado em cometas e asteroides, bem como nas partes mais frias do meio interestelar. Para formar novas estrelas, são necessárias nuvens moleculares interestelares compostas principalmente por moléculas de hidrogênio (H2). Uma nova estrela é formada quando parte dessa nuvem se contrai sob sua própria gravidade.

As moléculas podem ser detectadas no espaço porque, nas circunstâncias certas, ao girarem ou vibrarem, elas absorvem e emitem radiação eletromagnética em regiões de comprimento de onda estreito, geralmente no rádio ou no infravermelho. Essas "linhas moleculares" formam padrões que permitem a identificação de uma molécula.
