Description: 천문학에서 등급은 하늘에 있는 천체가 얼마나 밝은지를 나타내는 척도입니다. 이 등급 체계는 고대에 가장 밝은 별부터 가장 어두운 별까지 순서를 매기던 전통에서 유래했습니다. 그래서 등급의 값이 작을수록, 또는 음수일수록 더 밝고, 숫자가 커질수록 더 어둡습니다. 예를 들어 등급이 -1인 별은 등급이 0인 별보다 밝고, 등급이 1인 별보다 훨씬 더 밝습니다.

별의 등급은 로그 스케일로 표시되는데, 등급 차이가 5이면 실제 밝기, 즉 받는 에너지 양이 100배 차이가 납니다. 따라서 등급이 10인 별은 등급이 5인 별보다 100배 더 어둡습니다.

별의 밝기를 표현할 때는 겉보기등급과 절대등급이라는 두 가지 방식이 있습니다. 겉보기등급은 지구에서 봤을 때의 밝기로, 별의 실제 밝기(광도)와 지구까지의 거리에 모두 영향을 받습니다. 반면 절대등급은 별이 지구에서 10파섹(약 32.6광년) 떨어져 있다고 가정했을 때의 밝기를 뜻합니다. 다만 소행성과 같은 반사 물체의 경우는 다른 정의를 사용합니다.

실제 관측에서는 별빛을 특정 파장대의 빛으로 나누기 위해 필터를 사용하며, 어떤 필터를 사용하느냐에 따라 다양한 광도계 시스템이 있습니다. 이에 비해 복사등급은 천체가 단위 시간당 방출하는 전체 전자기 복사 에너지를 직접 측정한 값을 말합니다. 마지막으로 안시등급은 사람이 눈으로 보았을 때 느껴지는 밝기에 해당하는 등급입니다.
