Description: 절대등급에는 두 가지 정의가 있으며, 두 경우 모두 ‘특정 조건에서 물체가 얼마나 밝게 보이는가’를 나타냅니다. 이 값은 서로 다른 거리에 있는 천체의 고유한 밝기를 비교할 수 있게 해줍니다. 이는 관측자의 실제 위치에서 천체가 얼마나 밝게 보이는지를 나타내는 겉보기등급과 구별됩니다.

별이나 은하처럼 태양계 밖에 있는 천체의 경우, 절대등급은 성간소광의 영향을 제외하고, 그 천체를 10파섹(pc) 거리에서 관측했을 때의 겉보기등급으로 정의됩니다. 이 표준화된 기준 덕분에 천체 간의 ‘본질적인 밝기’를 직접 비교할 수 있습니다.

반면, 태양계 천체—예를 들어 소행성—의 경우 절대등급은 다음과 같이 정의됩니다. 태양계 천체가 태양으로부터 1천문단위(AU), 관측자로부터도 1천문단위(AU) 떨어진 거리에서, 충(opposition) 위치에 있을 때의 겉보기등급을 말합니다. 실제로는 이러한 조건이 성립하지 않지만, 이 정의를 사용하면 태양과 지구에 대한 상대적 위치 차이에 따른 밝기 변화를 제거하여, 서로 다른 태양계 천체의 본래 밝기를 비교할 수 있습니다.
