Glossary term: Polvere
Description: A differenza della Terra, i grani di polvere nello spazio profondo sono molto piccoli: la maggior parte di essi ha dimensioni inferiori a un millesimo di millimetro. Rappresentano un importante costituente della materia che si trova tra le stelle, chiamato mezzo interstellare. Si formano in ambienti diversi, come gli strati esterni di alcune stelle giganti fredde o in supernovae, e si disperdono nello spazio quando queste stelle iniziano a perdere massa. Sono per lo più composti da silicati, composti di carbonio e tracce di altri elementi. Potrebbero essere ricoperti di ghiaccio nelle regioni fredde e dense del mezzo interstellare. Sono i principali responsabili dell'assorbimento interstellare della luce che arriva a noi dai corpi celesti.
