Description: La Nube de Oort es una región hipotética del Sistema Solar exterior que se cree que es el origen de los cometas con períodos orbitales largos. Es probable que la Nube de Oort contenga muchos miles de millones de pequeños cuerpos helados, vestigios de la formación del Sistema Solar. Se cree que esta región constituye la reserva de cometas de largo período. En ocasiones, la órbita de uno de estos cuerpos helados se ve alterada por otro cuerpo helado o por la gravedad de una estrella que pasa cerca del Sistema Solar. Esto puede hacer que el cuerpo helado caiga hacia el interior del Sistema Solar, donde se convierte en un cometa. La Nube de Oort probablemente se extiende desde unos pocos miles de unidades astronómicas (UA) hasta quizás más de cien mil UA, a mitad de camino de Próxima Centauri, la estrella más cercana al Sol. Es probable que la parte interior de la Nube de Oort tenga forma de donut o dona, pero la parte exterior probablemente sea una capa esférica.
