Description: El término «población estelar» se refiere a un grupo de estrellas. En términos más generales, una población estelar es cualquier conjunto de estrellas, como, por ejemplo, la población estelar de una galaxia.

Más concretamente, este término se utiliza a menudo para referirse a las diferentes poblaciones de estrellas que conforman un cúmulo estelar o una galaxia. Estas poblaciones pueden tener diferentes edades o metalicidades, y pueden tener orígenes distintos.

Las estrellas de la Vía Láctea se dividen a menudo en estrellas de Población I (las estrellas más jóvenes del disco galáctico, con mayor metalicidad) y estrellas de Población II (las estrellas más antiguas del halo galáctico, con menor metalicidad). Las estrellas de Población III son una población teórica de estrellas con muy baja metalicidad. Se cree que las estrellas de Población III representan la primera generación de estrellas que se formó tras el Big Bang.
