Description: El halo galáctico es una distribución aproximadamente esférica de estrellas, gas y materia oscura que se extiende por encima, por debajo y más allá del disco de la Vía Láctea. Las estrellas del halo son más antiguas y tienen un menor contenido en metales que la mayoría de las estrellas del disco de la Vía Láctea. En la región cercana al Sol, solo un pequeño porcentaje de las estrellas procede del halo. En el halo galáctico también se encuentran cúmulos globulares de estrellas.

Un halo invisible de materia oscura se extiende asimismo a través y alrededor de la Vía Láctea, y contiene la mayor parte de la masa de la galaxia.

La mayoría de las demás galaxias también tienen halos.
