Glossary term: Telescopio espacial
Description: La radiación electromagnética procedente del espacio tiene que atravesar primero la atmósfera terrestre antes de que los telescopios terrestres puedan captarla. Los rayos gamma, los rayos X, la radiación ultravioleta y algunos tipos de radiación infrarroja son filtrados por completo por la atmósfera. Para observarlos, los astrónomos utilizan telescopios espaciales, a los que a veces también se denomina observatorios espaciales: satélites automatizados situados por encima de la atmósfera que llevan a bordo un telescopio e instrumentos, además del equipo necesario para orientar la nave espacial hacia un objetivo específico, recibir órdenes y transmitir datos a la Tierra. Como demuestra el centelleo de las estrellas, incluso la luz que atraviesa la atmósfera se ve alterada en el proceso. También en este caso, los telescopios espaciales pueden ser de ayuda. Sin embargo, los telescopios espaciales son difíciles de reparar. La mayoría de los telescopios espaciales se encuentran bien en órbita terrestre (como el telescopio espacial Hubble), o bien en el denominado punto de Lagrange L2 (como el telescopio espacial James Webb).

Hubble Space Telescope over Earth
Caption: The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope orbiting Earth. This picture was taken by astronauts on board the space shuttle Columbia, right after the Servicing Mission 3B to the space telescope itself. The telescope has an opening that allows light in (seen here on the left). The light travels through the telescope optics to the cameras and spectrographs located in the bulge at the other end of the observatory (seen here on the right). Data from these instruments is then sent back to Earth using an antenna. The black rectangles on either side of the observatory are the solar panels that provide it with power.
