Description: As Cefeidas são estrelas variáveis pulsantes cuja variabilidade é causada pela oscilação periódica das camadas externas da estrela. Elas receberam esse nome em referência à estrela protótipo, Delta Cephei. Uma característica importante das Cefeidas é que seu período de pulsação está intimamente relacionado à sua luminosidade. Essa é a famosa relação período-luminosidade revelada por Henrietta Leavitt em 1908. Usando essa relação, o brilho absoluto de uma Cefeida pode ser determinado a partir do seu período de pulsação. A diferença entre o brilho aparente facilmente observável e o brilho absoluto derivado dessa relação indica a distância tanto da Cefeida em questão quanto da galáxia externa que abriga essa estrela variável. Assim, as Cefeidas são os principais indicadores de distância na determinação da escala de distâncias cósmicas.
