Description: Uma lente é um dispositivo óptico que, por meio da refração, desvia a luz de modo que ela se concentre ou se disperse. As lentes são normalmente feitas de vidro, plástico ou algum outro material transparente. As lentes convexas concentram a luz, reunindo um feixe paralelo de luz em um ponto. As lentes côncavas espalham um feixe paralelo de luz, de modo que ele pareça ter origem em um único ponto.

As lentes são os principais componentes dos telescópios refratores, bem como dos binóculos. Mesmo que um telescópio astronômico seja um telescópio refletor (que usa espelhos para concentrar a luz), é provável que as câmeras e os espectrógrafos acoplados ao telescópio utilizem uma ou mais lentes.

Um objeto massivo pode ser chamado de “lente gravitacional” quando induz distorção óptica na imagem de outro objeto ao fundo. Essa distorção se deve à curvatura da luz proveniente do objeto ao fundo, causada pela gravidade do objeto massivo em primeiro plano; esse fenômeno é conhecido como lente gravitacional.
