Description: Un año luz es una unidad de longitud que se utiliza a veces en astronomía para expresar grandes distancias astronómicas, como las distancias a las estrellas o entre galaxias. Se define como la distancia que recorre la luz en el vacío en un año: 9.46 billones de kilómetros (km), es decir, 9.5 × 10¹² km. Al utilizar la unidad «año luz», las grandes distancias se vuelven numéricamente más manejables: la estrella más cercana al Sol está a 40 billones de km de distancia o, más sencillamente, a 4.25 años luz. Los astrónomos también utilizan las unidades «minutos luz» u «horas luz»: la luz tarda unos ocho minutos en llegar del Sol a la Tierra y unas cuatro horas en llegar a Neptuno. El año luz es un término poco utilizado en la investigación astronómica, donde el parsec (aproximadamente 3.26 años luz) es la medida de distancia preferida.
