Description: Der Farbindex eines Sternes oder eines anderen Himmelsobjekts gibt seinen Helligkeitsunterschied in zwei verschiedenen Farben oder Wellenlängenbereichen an - beispielsweise Gelb und Blau. Der üblichste Farbindex ist (B-V). Dabei ist B die Helligkeit, die durch einen Standard-Blaufilter gemessen wird. V ist die Helligkeit, die durch einen Standard-Gelbfilter gemessen wird. Der B-Filter entspricht der Farbempfindlichkeit altmodischer Fotoplatten, der V-Filter der Farbempfindlichkeit des menschlichen Auges. Bei Sternen ist (B-V) ein Maß für ihre Temperatur, obwohl dieser gemessene Farbindex auch durch die Rötung von Staub zwischen den Sternen beeinflusst werden kann.
