Description: O princípio cosmológico é a base da cosmologia moderna e se fundamenta em observações e num pressuposto fundamental. Afirma que, espacialmente, o Universo é isotrópico e homogêneo em grandes escalas (escalas superiores a algumas centenas de milhões de anos-luz). Observações em escalas suficientemente grandes mostram que o Universo parece “ter a mesma aparência” em qualquer direção; não há nenhuma direção preferencial (isotrópico). A suposição fundamental, baseada no Princípio Copernicano (os seres humanos não ocupam um lugar especial no Universo), é que o Universo é igual em todos os lugares (homogêneo); parece não haver nenhuma localização preferencial. O princípio cosmológico é acompanhado pelo conceito de universalidade, segundo o qual as leis da física e as constantes fundamentais são as mesmas em todos os lugares do Universo: aqui na Terra ou em uma galáxia distante.
