Description: A zona habitável de uma estrela é definida como a região ao seu redor onde a água líquida pode existir na superfície de um planeta semelhante à Terra. Se a Terra estivesse muito mais distante do Sol, toda a água da superfície congelaria; se estivesse muito mais próxima, toda a água da superfície evaporaria. Em nenhum dos dois casos a vida como a conhecemos poderia se formar ou sobreviver. Às vezes, o conceito de zona habitável é estendido para incluir um planeta como Vênus, com seu efeito estufa descontrolado, onde a água líquida poderia existir mesmo que o planeta estivesse mais distante do Sol. A zona habitável galáctica é a parte da nossa galáxia onde as condições são adequadas para sistemas planetários que abrigam vida: ali, os elementos mais pesados, dos quais os planetas semelhantes à Terra são feitos, devem ser suficientemente comuns, e eventos que ameaçam a vida, como supernovas, devem ser suficientemente raros.

Deve-se observar que condições habitáveis podem existir fora da zona habitável. Por exemplo, o oceano subterrâneo possivelmente habitável na lua Europa, de Júpiter.
