Glossary term: 오존
Description: 오존(O₃)은 산소 원자 3개로 이루어진 무색 또는 옅은 청색의 기체입니다. 오존은 인체에 유독한 물질이며, 대기 중의 양은 아주 적습니다. 어떤 지역에서는 오존의 양이 100만 분의 1(1ppm) 이하에 불과하기도 합니다. 오존은 위치에 따라 지구의 생명체를 보호하기도 하고, 해롭기도 합니다.
오존의 대부분은 성층권에 존재하며, 태양에서 오는 자외선(UV)으로부터 지구 표면을 보호하는 방패 역할을 합니다. 하지만 사람들이 염화플루오린화탄소(CFC) 같은 가스를 냉매나 에어로졸 스프레이의 추진제로 사용하면서 이 보호막(오존층)이 약해졌습니다. 그 결과 피부암, 백내장, 면역 체계 약화 등의 위험이 커졌습니다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 1987년에 체결된 몬트리올 의정서에서는 이러한 가스의 사용을 금지했습니다. 그 이후로 성층권의 오존층이 점차 회복되고 있습니다.
한편, 지표면 근처나 대류권 안에 있는 오존은 해로운 오염 물질로 작용합니다. 이 오존은 폐 조직을 손상시키고, 식물의 잎과 줄기에도 피해를 줄 수 있습니다.
