Glossary term: Aurora
Description: L'aurora è uno spettacolo di luce diffusa di colore variabile nell'atmosfera terrestre, principalmente nelle regioni polari. A nord è conosciuta come Luci del Nord o aurora boreale, a sud come Luci del Sud o aurora australe. Le aurore variano di colore, dal bianco-verdastro al rosso, si manifestano principalmente ad altitudini di circa 100 chilometri e si formano attorno a due ovali aurorali irregolari, centrati sui poli magnetici della Terra. Le aurore hanno luogo quando le particelle cariche provenienti dal vento solare o dalle espulsioni di massa coronale (CME) rimangono intrappolate nella magnetosfera terrestre, vengono concentrate dai campi magnetici nell'alta atmosfera e percorrono traiettorie a spirale lungo le linee del campo magnetico terrestre verso i poli. Le loro interazioni con gli atomi e le molecole atmosferiche producono le emissioni aurorali. Questo effetto è potenziato durante i periodi d'intensa attività solare. Le aurore sono state osservate anche su altri pianeti del Sistema solare, in particolare su Giove e Saturno.
