Description: Një astronom studion objektet që përbëjnë Universin. Astronomët mund të jenë profesionistë ose amatorë. Astronomët profesionistë dhe disa astronomë amatorë analizojnë të dhëna shkencore të marra përmes teleskopëve në Tokë dhe në hapësirë për t’iu përgjigjur pyetjeve mbi përbërjen e objekteve kozmike, shpërndarjen, evolucionin dhe të ardhmen e tyre. Me këtë informacion, astronomët formulojnë teori të reja që shpjegojnë atë që shohim në Univers, nga shkallët më të vogla deri te ato më të mëdha. Disa astronomë amatorë e vëzhgojnë qiellin thjesht për të admiruar mrekullinë e Universit. Në praktikë, nuk ka dallim midis një astronomi profesionist dhe një astrofizikani. Në astronominë moderne, vëzhgimet profesionale lidhen gjithmonë me përpjekjet për të modeluar proceset fizike që prodhojnë fenomenet që vëzhgohen, dhe formimi universitar në astronomi përfshin domosdoshmërisht njohuritë përkatëse të fizikës.
