Description: O zero absoluto é o ponto zero da escala de temperatura kelvin, correspondente a -273,15 graus na escala Celsius e -459,67 graus na escala Fahrenheit. Essa escolha do ponto zero é motivada pela física fundamental: para um sistema clássico, a temperatura do zero absoluto corresponderia a um estado em que todas as partículas estão em repouso perfeito, cada uma com energia cinética zero. No mundo real, os efeitos básicos da teoria quântica significam que esse estado de repouso completo nunca será alcançado.

Na linguagem da termodinâmica, que descreve sistemas gerais e suas capacidades de trocar calor e outras formas de energia, um sistema idealizado à temperatura zero absoluto seria um sistema do qual nenhum calor poderia ser extraído. Na prática, é impossível levar um sistema a esse estado ideal. Isso é descrito pela chamada 3ª lei da termodinâmica, também chamada de teorema de Nernst: podemos nos aproximar arbitrariamente do zero absoluto, mas nunca podemos alcançá-lo.
