Description: Na ciência, a hipótese se refere a uma ideia ou previsão que um cientista pode ter. Ela pode ter alguma evidência, mas não foi comprovada. É somente por meio de experimentos, observações, dados e modelos que uma hipótese é gradualmente refinada ou completamente descartada. Ao contrário da crença popular, uma hipótese nem sempre é o primeiro estágio no desenvolvimento do conhecimento científico. Por exemplo, os cientistas fazem observações de fenômenos ou objetos, analisam os dados e, em seguida, propõem uma explicação ou fazem uma previsão do que pode estar acontecendo: Essa é a hipótese deles. É somente por meio de dados e observações adicionais que a hipótese é validada ou não. Uma hipótese pode ter uma base matemática ou começar com uma formulação matemática que faz uma previsão.
