Description: Proxima Centauri, nota anche come Alfa Centauri C, è la stella più vicina al Sole a una distanza di 4,24 anni luce (1,302 parsec), ovvero circa 40 mila miliardi di chilometri. È una stella nana rossa, più piccola del Sole per dimensioni e massa, e quindi troppo debole per essere vista ad occhio nudo. Al momento in cui scriviamo, c'è un pianeta confermato che orbita intorno a Proxima Centauri. È stato designato come Proxima Centauri b, e la sua orbita si trova nella cosiddetta zona abitabile della stella. Altri due candidati pianeti, Proxima Centauri c e d, non sono ancora stati confermati. Insieme ad Alfa Centauri A e B, Proxima Centauri forma il sistema stellare di Alfa-Centauri, composto da tre stelle legate gravitazionalmente.
