Description: El término «fotón» proviene del griego phōs, que significa «luz», y por lo tanto se utiliza como sinónimo e indistintamente de «luz». Cuando los astrónomos hablan de a la luz, se refieren a todo tipo de radiación electromagnética, desde las ondas de radio hasta los rayos gamma.

Un fotón es una partícula fundamental, portadora de la fuerza electromagnética, y se considera el paquete más pequeño (cuanto) de energía electromagnética. El cuanto de energía asociado a un fotón de una frecuencia determinada es proporcional a dicha frecuencia e inversamente proporcional a su longitud de onda.

Según las teorías modernas, un fotón no es solo una partícula, sino también una onda. En astronomía, los fotones son fundamentales para nuestra capacidad de observar y medir diversos aspectos del Universo y de los objetos que contiene.
