Description: Ein Sternbild ist laut der modernen Definition ein genau abgegrenztes Segment am Himmel. Die Internationale Astronomische Union (IAU) hat die gesamte Himmelskugel in 88 derartige Bereiche - Sternbilder - eingeteilt. Diese Einteilung beruht auf im antiken Griechenland verwendeten Sternbildern sowie auf jüngeren Sternbildern, besonderes auf der Südhalbkugel. Da jedes der 88 Sternbilder einen genau festgelegten Bereich des Himmels abdeckt, kann jeder Himmelskörper - von Sternen über Galaxien bis hin zu Nebeln, usw. - einem Sternbild zugeordnet werden. Der Tierkreis (Zodiak) besteht aus 13 Sternbildern, die sich mit der Ekliptik (der jährlichen Bahn der Sonne über die Himmelskugel) überschneiden. Die 13 Sternbilder sind: Schlangenträger, Schütze, Steinbock, Wassermann, Fische, Widder, Stier, Zwillinge, Krebs, Löwe, Jungfrau, Waage und Skorpion.
Sternbilder enthalten Gruppierungen von Sternen (Asterismen), die von der Erde aus gesehen ein Muster ergeben. Diese Muster werden anschaulich als Menschen, Tiere oder andere erkennbare Objekte beschrieben.
