Description: 핵에서 헬륨에서 탄소로 융합하는 별을 수평가지별이라고 합니다. 이 별들은 헤르츠스프룽-러셀도표에서 수평 가지를 따라 위치하는데, 이는 표면 온도(유효 온도)는 다양하지만 밝기(광도)가 거의 일정하기 때문입니다. 그래서 ‘수평가지별’이라는 이름이 붙었습니다. 이 별들은 적색거성 단계를 지나면서 외층의 일부 질량을 잃은 뒤 진화한 별들입니다. 태양 질량의 약 8배 이하인 주계열성은 이런 수평가지 단계를 거칠 수 있습니다.
