Glossary term: Croce del Sud
Description: La Croce del Sud è il nome comune della costellazione dell'emisfero meridionale Crux. Ha cinque stelle visibili a occhio nudo che formano una lunga croce, è compatta e facilmente riconoscibile. La Croce copre l'area più piccola della sfera celeste di tutte le 88 costellazioni ufficiali. La stella più luminosa, ⍺ Crucis, è un sistema di stelle triple, mentre β Crucis è una variabile cefeide. Crux contiene anche uno splendido ammasso aperto, il Jewel Box (NGC 4755). Crux può essere usata per trovare il sud e il polo sud celeste. È rappresentata sulle bandiere di Australia, Brasile, Nuova Zelanda, Papua Nuova Guinea e Samoa.
