Glossary term: Osservatorio astronomico
Description: Un osservatorio astronomico è un luogo progettato e costruito esclusivamente per facilitare l'osservazione scientifica di oggetti extra-terrestri. Dispone di strumenti specializzati come telescopi, telecamere CCD con filtri speciali, sale computer e strumenti appropriati per analizzare le immagini e altri tipi di dati scientifici. Di solito ha cupole o tetti a forma di cupola progettati per proteggere i telescopi e gli altri strumenti dalle intemperie. Questi tetti si aprono e si spostano per consentire l'osservazione di una determinata regione del cielo. L'osservatorio può essere dotato di speciali controlli della temperatura per mantenere gli specchi o le lenti e le altre apparecchiature nelle migliori condizioni. Si noti che i telescopi spaziali sono spesso indicati come osservatori spaziali (ad esempio: Chandra X-ray Observatory; Solar and Heliospheric Observatory).
