Description: Neptunus adalah planet kedelapan dan terjauh dari Matahari. Seperti tetangganya, Uranus, Neptunus adalah planet es raksasa. Radius Neptunus hanya kurang dari 25 ribu kilometer (km), kurang dari empat kali radius Bumi. Neptunus memiliki inti batuan padat yang dikelilingi oleh lapisan air , metana, dan amonia bertekanan tinggi. Pada masa awal Tata Surya, zat-zat kimia tersebut membeku dan terakumulasi di Neptunus muda, sehingga dinamakan "raksasa es". Atmosfer luar Neptunus merupakan lapisan hidrogen dan helium yang tebal dan menggembung.

Jarak Neptunus dari Matahari sekitar 4,5 miliar km, atau sekitar 30 satuan astronomi (jarak Bumi-Matahari). Neptunus memiliki setidaknya 14 bulan dan sistem cincin yang redup. Sebagai planet besar terluar, gravitasi Neptunus memainkan peran penting dalam membentuk orbit benda-benda yang lebih kecil di Sabuk Kuiper.

Neptunus tidak dapat dilihat dengan mata telanjang. Neptunus pertama kali diidentifikasi karena pengaruh gravitasinya terhadap orbit Uranus. Ahli matematika John Couch Adams dan Urbain Le Verrier memperkirakan keberadaan dan lokasi Neptunus pada awal tahun 1840-an. Berdasarkan perhitungan Le Verrier, Johann Gottfried Galle pertama kali mengidentifikasi Neptunus pada tahun 1846. Neptunus diambil dari nama dewa laut Romawi.
