The Sun as red disk with bright patches and long dark strands. Several small wispy features protrude from the disk's edge

H-alpha image of the Sun's chromosphere

image

Légende : This false-color image was captured with a 10-cm telescope at the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) in the United States in July 2002. It depicts the full disk of the Sun using the H-alpha emission line of hydrogen. When observed in this spectral line, the Sun's chromosphere appears particularly prominent due to hydrogen atoms emitting light at the specific wavelength. This emission produces a distinctive red color, making features such as spicules (jets of plasma that look hair-like) and plage (bright patches in the chromosphere) highly visible. Several small solar prominences can be seen protruding from the edge of the solar disk. When prominences (also known as filaments) cross the face of the disk they appear as dark threads caused by the cooler material in the prominence absorbing light. The chromosphere is also visible in the violet part of the solar spectrum due to ionized calcium showing emissions in these wavelengths.

Eight images of the Sun rising. From the lower, earlier images the Moon moves across the Sun from top left to bottom right.

Equatorial Sunrise Eclipse

image
Créé pour l'OAE

Légende : Third place winner in the 2023 IAU OAE Astrophotography Contest, category of Still images of day arcs of the Sun and Solargraphs. This breathtaking image shows a sunrise sequence of the annular eclipse of 2006, as it unfolds against the tranquil backdrop of Des Roches beach in Kourou, French Guiana. Positioned near a renowned spaceport, this location provides an impeccable viewpoint to behold the celestial event. This image was captured using an analogue camera, with a shot being taken every 10 minutes on the same film frame. The exposures were changed as the Sun rose. The Moon’s disc can be seen gradually moving across the Sun’s disc from the earliest (lower) image until it covers the Sun. It then slowly moves away, revealing the whole of the solar disc again. Kourou’s unique geographic location close to Earth’s equator ensures that the path of the rising Sun is nearly perpendicular to the horizon, magnifying the splendour of the eclipse.
