Description: Nuclear fusion is a process where the nuclei of lighter elements (e.g. hydrogen) fuse (come) together to form the nucleus of a heavier element (e.g. helium). The total mass of the new nucleus is, however, smaller than the combined mass of the unbound particles; the remaining mass is converted into energy. For example, in the core of the Sun hydrogen nuclei fuse together to form helium and release energy in the form of radiation.
